Preserve the Historic St. Johns County Jail Annex and Honor its Civil Rights Legacy
The Issue
The St. Johns County Jail Annex in Florida is far more than a structure; it is a tangible link to our nation's history and the struggles for civil rights that defined an era. This place is deeply personal to me because it was here that 16 Rabbis, caught up in the largest mass arrest of Rabbis in US history, were held on the night of June 18-19, 1964. Beneath this jail's ceiling, they penned a powerful letter to their fellows noting that "injustice in St. Augustine, as anywhere else, diminishes the humanity of each of us...We came to St. Augustine mainly because we could not stay away...We came because we could not stand quietly by our brother’s blood. We had done that too many times before."
With the calling of leaders past echoing in its halls, this jail annex's proposed demolition threatens to erase these voices of resilience and courage. Many of them have passed away, but their legacy should not. The St. Johns County Jail Annex is a vital architectural testament to the national civil rights movement and the struggles endured by its champions.
We must rally to save this crucial historic site and preserve it as a potent symbol of the struggle for equality, an enduring reminder of the tragic injustice that was fought on the streets of St. Augustine, and the stalwart resilience of those who stood against it. Sign this petition to preserve this invaluable piece of history for generations to come. Because to lose this building is to lose an irreplaceable part of our shared human story.
